Located in the southern part of Xinjiang, the Tarim Basin is the largest inland basin in China. The terrain is high in the west and low in the east. It is a large closed intermountain basin. The Tarim Basin is mainly composed of brown desert soil, cracked soil and residual saline soil. The natural resources are very rich. In the Tarim Basin, there is a desert known as the "Sea of Death", which is the Taklimakan Desert.

The Taklimakan Desert is located in the center of the Tarim Basin, with a total area of about 337,600 square kilometers. It is the second largest desert in the world after the Sahara Desert in Africa and one of the five most beautiful deserts in China. not come", hence the name "Sea of Death"

This large desert is one of the most dynamic deserts. The typical continental climate, with strong wind and sand, large temperature changes, and little rainfall throughout the year, grows numerous poplar forests and willow shrubs, forming the characteristics of a desert oasis. At the same time, it has abundant groundwater resources, which are rich in storage and conducive to development.

In 1995, the Taklimakan Desert Highway was completed, with a total length of 552 motive powers, driving the economic development of the Youna River area, promoting cultural exchanges and the stability of the frontier. In order to ensure the smooth flow of the road, the officials established green ecological protection forests on both sides, which not only protected the road and played a role in preventing sand, but also improved the ecological environment of the desert.

This desert has always been the center of the Silk Road since ancient times. The Taklim Dry Desert Highway is currently the longest graded highway in the world running through the flowing desert and the earliest desert highway in China. It adopts the structural construction technology of "strong base and thin surface", and uses such technologies as "reed fence" and "reed square", and is in a leading position in the world.

This highway is a miracle of China's sand control and a great project to conquer the "sea of death". Two desert highways have passed through the Taklimakan Desert, namely the Luntai-Minfeng Desert Highway and the Aral-Hotian Desert Highway. They have improved production efficiency for China's petroleum industry, greatly saved transportation costs, and reduced technical costs for exploration and development.
