Parents should know these first aid measures when the baby accidentally bites off the thermometer and eats 'mercury'

Mercury, scientific name mercury, is a chemical element that is chronically toxic when evaporated at room temperature.

Therefore, from this definition, it can be seen that if the baby eats mercury by mistake, it will pose a great threat to the baby's life.

For example, the liver, central nervous system, brain, taste, mouth, etc. may be damaged.

So, if the baby eats mercury by mistake, what should parents do in a short time to minimize the threat to life?

Mom calmed down and gave first aid to the baby who accidentally ate "mercury", the doctor praised it

Xiaofang's child is 5 years old this year, and his family likes to call him Xiaobao. In normal times, Xiaobao likes to grab something that interests him and put it in his mouth.

That time, Xiaobao's head was a little hot, so Xiaofang took Xiaobao's temperature with a thermometer.

After reading the readings and confirming that Xiaobao did not have a fever, when he was about to put the thermometer away, he heard someone knocking on the door.

She didn't care, so she put the thermometer on the table casually. When he came back, he saw that Xiaobao bit off the thermometer, blood flowed from his mouth, and there were shards of glass and leaking mercury on the ground.

She was so scared that her face turned pale! However, no one can underestimate the instinct of a mother. Not knowing where she came from, she took a step forward, picked up Xiaobao and rushed to the bathroom.

Quickly wash Xiaobao's mouth and hands, and make sure the blood in his mouth is cleaned. He hurried to the kitchen again, took out the raw eggs, skimmed off the yolks, and kept the egg whites for Xiaobao to drink them all.

Finally picked up Xiaobao and rushed to the hospital. Fortunately, after the doctor's examination, it was confirmed that there were no abnormal symptoms such as dizziness and abdominal pain caused by mercury poisoning. After asking, I found out that Xiaofang had already taken first aid measures before coming.

Children are full of curiosity about the world, they don't know what is safe and what is dangerous. Therefore, you never know what your child will suddenly pick up and put in his mouth the next second.

Remember the following four points about the first-aid method for accidentally ingesting mercury, so as to minimize the damage that mercury may cause to the body.

First aid for mercury ingestion

①Rinse the mouth

Rinse the mercury in the mouth with water to prevent the mercury from harming the oral mucosa and teeth. It is best to use flowing water for more thorough cleaning.

② drink egg white

When mercury encounters the protein in the egg white, it has the effect of alleviating the toxicity of mercury. For the mercury that has been drunk into the child's stomach, drinking egg white can protect the gastric mucosa to a certain extent.

If you don't have eggs, you can also fry leeks for your children. Because leeks are easier to digest, the mercury in the stomach will be excreted along with the leek residue. Of course, you can also flush with water to induce vomiting.

③ Immediately seek medical attention

After completing the above two first aid measures, send the child to the hospital for further examination.

Here's what you need to know about first aid if your thermometer shatters and mercury spills on the floor.

First aid method for mercury scattered on the ground

①Realize air circulation

When mercury falls on the ground of the home, the first step is to achieve air convection, open the windows, and let the outdoor air exchange with the indoor air.

The purpose of doing this is, on the one hand, the air in the room will drop, delaying the volatilization of mercury; on the other hand, the toxicity of mercury that has volatilized in the air is no longer concentrated in the room, and the concentration of mercury is diluted.

②Reduce the indoor temperature

When heating equipment such as heating is turned on indoors, it must be turned off to lower the indoor temperature and reduce the volatilization rate of mercury.

③ clean up

Do not vacuum up mercury

Because the vacuum cleaner, as a windy electrified device, will accelerate the evaporation of mercury during use, the consequence of this can only be an increase in the concentration of mercury in the air.

Don't just use the mop

Mopping up mercury can have two harmful consequences:

Consequence one, the cleaned mop contains mercury. When the mop is cleaned with water, the mercury on the mop will follow the water pipe into the sewer, eventually causing water pollution;

Consequence 2: Cleaning up mercury with a mop does not necessarily ensure that the mercury can be cleaned up, and it will also rub against the ground during mopping to generate heat, causing the mercury to volatilize quickly and emit toxicity.

The best way is to take out a piece of hard paper, fold it into a shape that is easy to scoop up the mercury, and then clean up the mercury.

④ Throw out mercury

After cleaning up the mercury, don't throw it directly into the trash can, because the trash can is indoors, and the mercury can still volatilize in the trash can.

You can wrap all the mercury in cardboard, wrap it in toilet paper several times, and throw it in the trash.
